A park covering an area of just 2.5 square feet in Nagaizumi, Japan, was officially named the world’s smallest park, breaking the previous record held by a US park located in Portland, Oregon.

“The smallest park measures 0.24 m² (372 in²) and was achieved by Nagaizumi Town (Japan) in Nagaizumi, Shizuoka, Japan,” according to the Guinness World Records.

A worker at the construction management division of Nagaizumi Town created it after returning from a trip to the United States where he encountered Mill Ends Park in Portland, Oregon.

The US park previously held the record at 3.1 square feet.

Shuji Koyama, a team leader at the construction management division, told Guinness World Records: “So, they wanted to create an even smaller park,”

The tiny park did not solidify its place in the record books despite its completion in 1988.

However, it has now been certified as the smallest park in the world after its dimensions were officially measured by the Guinness World Records in December last year.

Koyama said: “We want to continue maintaining the park with the community, as well as creating a landscape that is more social media friendly so that even more people will find attractions of our town.”
