The cast of Gilmore Girls is going viral for an unlikely reason, their “millennial pauses” in Cameo videos.
The personalized-video platform itself posted a compilation to Instagram highlighting the trend, captioning it, “Millennial pauses on Cameo, Gilmore girls edition but we knows it rlly just them letting us sink in their aura.”
The “millennial pause” refers to the brief one-to-two-second hesitation many millennials make at the start of a selfie video, after hitting record but before speaking, a habit that’s become a source of gentle ridicule from Gen Z, who tend to launch straight into talking on camera.
In Cameo’s compilation, stars including Scott Patterson, Emily Kuroda, Max Medina, Rose Abdoo, Yanic Truesdale and Michael Winters can all be seen pausing before delivering their personalized messages, with text overlaid reading, “millennial pauses on cameo: gilmore girl edition.”
The video drew a wave of good-natured reaction in the comments, with one user writing in defense of the cast, “LET THEM BE!!!!” and another joking, “As a pausing Gen X-er, this made me laugh!! There’s nothing funnier than someone making fun of me myself!”
Gilmore Girls, which premiered October 5, 2000, followed mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, through life and romance in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, alongside a cast that also included Scott Patterson, Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Padalecki and Matt Czuchry.
The lighthearted moment comes as the show continues its 25th-anniversary victory lap, HBO Max announced on Wednesday, August 5, that it’s producing an as-yet-untitled documentary about the series, directed by Bonni Cohen, whose past credits include In Waves and Athlete A, and produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television.
