Ernest Harden Jr. has won his first-ever Emmy at age 73, taking home Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmys for his role as recurring ER patient Louie Cloverfield on HBO Max’s The Pitt.

He beat out a competitive field that included Colman Domingo for Euphoria, Jeff Hiller for Pluribus, Jonathan Pryce for Slow Horses and Bradley Whitford for The Diplomat.

Speaking backstage, Harden described the win as overwhelming after a career built largely on supporting and guest roles.

“I am on cloud 25,” he said.

“I’m not saying this is a complete surprise because The Pitt is such a powerful show to come from, but just to get it in your hands is like unreal.”

Accepting the award on stage with his eyes closed, he dedicated it to actress Bette Davis, who had been nominated for her performance in White Mana but didn’t win that night, saying, “We didn’t make it then but this one is for us!”

Harden also shared a behind-the-scenes moment about learning that his character would die during Season 2, recalling a conversation with showrunner Noah Wyle before he’d been told directly.

“One time I said to Noah, am I gonna die because all the wardrobe people and everybody’s stopping me and they’re crying and I’m saying, what’s going on? I plan on being here five years! That’s just five days in The Pitt world,” he said, referencing the show’s structure, in which each season unfolds over a single hospital shift.

“Noah said, sit right here, and he said, America’s gonna cry for you, and he wasn’t lying. He just said trust me.”

Louie, a beloved “frequent flier” patient dealing with alcoholism and liver failure, died from a pulmonary hemorrhage in Season 2, a storyline that generated a significant fan campaign pushing for Harden’s Emmy recognition.

Harden’s career dates back to 1975, including a recurring role as Marcus Henderson on The Jeffersons and an appearance in White Men Can’t Jump.
