Elon Musk steps into AI filmmaking with new take on ‘The Odyssey’

Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced plans for a full length AI generated adaptation of “The Odyssey,” saying the project would offer what he called a historically accurate take on Homer’s ancient Greek epic.

According to Musk, his AI model Grok imagine, will produce a complete feature length film based on the epic before the end of 2026, describing the planned adaptation as staying true to Homer’s original work.

Musk’s announcement came alongside criticism of filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s own adaptation of “The Odyssey,” specifically targeting the casting of actress Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. Musk suggested the casting decision was motivated by awards consideration, saying Nolan made the choice because “he wants the awards.”

Musk also pointed to the AI generated clip he shared, which featured an all white cast, as more closely aligned with his own vision of a historically accurate adaptation of the ancient text.

Musk’s remarks have sparked renewed discussion online, touching on both the growing use of AI in filmmaking and broader debates over historical representation and casting choices in adaptations of ancient literature.

Nolan’s take on “The Odyssey” has been widely discussed as one of the director’s most ambitious projects, tackling one of the oldest and most influential stories in human history.

Critics have noted that rather than simply retelling the original narrative, Nolan’s version leans into spectacle, emotional depth, and philosophical themes, building on the source material while adding his own directorial approach.

The production has also drawn attention for its large scale scope, with reviewers highlighting its practical effects, cinematography, and overall commitment to realism across its major set pieces.

With Musk’s AI generated version reportedly still in early stages and Nolan’s adaptation already generating significant attention, the contrast between the two projects has become a focal point in broader conversations about how ancient stories are being reinterpreted through both traditional filmmaking and emerging AI technology.
