ECP summons PTI MPA Dr Amjad Ali in assets beyond means case

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA from Swat, Dr Amjad Ali, in connection with an assets beyond means case.

According to an official notice issued by the ECP Secretariat in Islamabad, Dr Amjad Ali has been directed to appear before the commission on February 3, 2026, at 10:00 am. The notice states that discrepancies have been identified in the statement of assets and liabilities submitted by the MPA for the financial year 2023–24.

The proceedings have been initiated under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017, read with relevant election rules and constitutional provisions. The petition seeks Dr Amjad Ali’s disqualification over alleged differences between his declared assets and known sources of income.

The ECP has instructed the PTI lawmaker to appear in person or through legal counsel at its Islamabad office. The commission will examine the discrepancies highlighted in the petition during the hearing.

The development has sparked political debate, as Dr Amjad Ali has previously spoken publicly in the provincial assembly against corruption and in favor of transparent governance. Critics argue that the case raises questions about PTI’s long-standing narrative of “clean politics” and accountability.

PTI leadership has yet to issue an official response to the notice. The outcome of the February 3 hearing will determine whether further legal action or disqualification proceedings are pursued against the lawmaker.

The case adds to a growing list of accountability proceedings involving elected representatives across party lines, as the ECP continues scrutiny of lawmakers’ asset declarations.
