The Dutch central bank said Wednesday that it has transferred 86 metric tons of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to Britain, citing rising geopolitical tensions and the greater ease of trading gold in London.
De Nederlandsche Bank, or DNB, said gold held in London can be traded more easily than reserves stored in New York and Ottawa.
The bank said the Netherlands held 612.4 metric tons of gold reserves at the end of 2025, with a total value of 72.2 billion euros ($84 billion).
Before the latest transfer, 31.3% of the Netherlands’ gold was held in New York and 19.7% in Ottawa. Following the move, the share held in the United States and Canada has fallen to 18.5% each.
Meanwhile, the proportion of Dutch gold stored in London has increased from 18.1% to 32.1%. About 30.8% of the country’s gold reserves remain stored in the Netherlands.
DNB said the transfer was carried out partly through gold trading and partly through the physical movement of bullion.

As part of the operation, more than 27 metric tons of gold were moved from the United States and Canada to the Dutch city of Zeist. An equivalent amount was then transported from Zeist to London.
