DUBAI: Dubai Municipality has inaugurated the ViruGenetics Laboratory at the Dubai Central Laboratory, marking a significant advancement in food safety and viral detection capabilities through cutting-edge genomic technology.

The facility is dedicated to identifying foodborne viruses using advanced molecular testing methods and is the first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates.

It is designed to process around 60 samples per day with capacity expandable up to 100 samples during emergency situations. The laboratory delivers rapid results enabling faster inspections and supporting evidence-based decision-making.

The new lab strengthens the capabilities of Dubai Central Laboratory in line with international food safety standards and aligns with Dubai Municipality’s broader strategy to implement globally recognised practices in testing and calibration services.

At the core of the facility is digital PCR (dPCR) technology, one of the most advanced techniques in molecular diagnostics worldwide. This system provides highly accurate and sensitive detection of viral pathogens, including norovirus, hepatitis A, and hepatitis E.

The technology is particularly effective in testing complex food samples such as dairy products, seafood, juices, and fresh produce, maintaining high precision even in challenging conditions. All procedures are carried out in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards, ensuring quality, reliability, and global compliance.

According to Eng. Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department at Dubai Municipality, the launch of the ViruGenetics Lab reflects the authority’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies and strengthening Dubai’s position as a global leader in food safety and public health oversight.

She added that the laboratory will also function as a scientific hub for collaboration with universities and research institutions, contributing to the development of a national database on foodborne viruses.

This initiative is expected to enhance research capabilities and support proactive, data-driven decision-making to improve food safety systems across the emirate.
