KARACHI:A 28-year-old doctor was killed in a shooting during a daylight bank robbery outside a private bank in Karachi’s Clifton area, as armed robbers escaped with Rs2.5 million in cash, police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South Mahzoor Ali said the victim, identified as Akash, had withdrawn Rs5 million along with his father and an associate from a private bank near Teen Talwar. The group was heading to another bank in the Boat Basin area to deposit the money when armed assailants intercepted their vehicle outside the bank.
According to police, a security guard opened fire at the robbers, who returned fire during the exchange. Akash was fatally shot in the crossfire, while the suspects fled with one of the two cash bags containing Rs2.5 million.
Police said the deceased was a doctor and had accompanied his father to withdraw the cash. Authorities have taken the security guard involved in the shooting into custody as part of the investigation.
Investigators said all aspects of the incident are being examined, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspects responsible for the robbery and fatal shooting.

A spokesperson for JPMC said Dr Akash was a dedicated, hardworking and highly committed house officer who was respected by his colleagues and seniors.
The spokesperson added that Dr Akash had recently been selected as a Medical Officer through the latest commission examination and was seeking a posting at JPMC.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the fatal shooting of Dr Akash during a robbery near Teen Talwar in Karachi’s Clifton area and ordered the immediate arrest of those responsible.
The chief minister directed Karachi Additional Inspector General of Police to submit a comprehensive investigation report and ensure the swift apprehension of the suspects involved in the incident.
Murad Ali Shah said there would be no compromise on law and order, stressing that authorities must intensify efforts to curb street crime and armed robberies across the city.
He also instructed police to take effective measures to prevent robbery incidents and improve public safety.
The chief minister expressed his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the family of Dr. Akash, who was killed during the robbery near Teen Talwar.
