Did Princess Elisabeth use her Royal Title to get her Harvard degree?

Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, the heir apparent to the Belgian throne, has successfully completed her Master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University, marking a significant academic milestone in the journey of the 24-year-old future queen who continues to balance royal responsibility with world-class education.

The Crown Princess graduated this week from the Harvard Kennedy School during the Class of 2026 commencement ceremonies in the United States, joining fellow graduates for a series of formal events including the awards ceremony and the main commencement address before receiving her degree.

Her parents, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, attended the ceremony at Harvard Yard, visibly emotional and proud as they watched their eldest daughter complete her postgraduate studies at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions.

Princess Elisabeth appeared in traditional Harvard graduation attire, wearing the iconic cap and gown over a simple white dress, with a subtle Belgian flag detail reflecting both her academic achievement and national identity.

In a notable detail that drew attention, the future queen did not use her royal title during the graduation ceremony. Instead, she was called by her formal name, “Elisabeth de Saxe-Cobourg,” the French version of her royal family name.

Interestingly, this choice also influenced the order in which she appeared during the ceremony, placing her earlier in the alphabetical lineup compared to the Dutch version of her surname.

The decision reflects a familiar tradition among European royals studying abroad, where titles are often set aside to experience university life more naturally and integrate seamlessly with fellow students.

During her time in Boston, Elisabeth reportedly kept a low profile and was known among peers simply as “Lizzie.” Sources suggest she actively embraced student life and preferred being treated as an ordinary student rather than a royal figure.

In a recent reflection, she shared that she valued the anonymity of campus life, saying it allowed her to experience a sense of normality away from royal expectations.

Princess Elisabeth’s Harvard graduation completes an impressive international academic path:

    • 2020: International Baccalaureate from UWC Atlantic College, Wales
    • 2021: Training at the Royal Military Academy, Belgium
    • 2024: Degree in History and Politics from Oxford University
    • 2026: Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard University

Each stage reflects a carefully built foundation preparing her for future leadership responsibilities.

The Belgian Royal Palace shared images from the ceremony, highlighting the emotional presence of the King and Queen as they celebrated their daughter’s achievement.

With her academic chapter now complete, reports suggest Princess Elisabeth may take a short break before gradually stepping into more formal royal duties, including diplomatic and institutional engagements alongside King Philippe.

As the first in line to the Belgian throne under the country’s system of absolute primogeniture, Princess Elisabeth is set to become Belgium’s first queen regnant.

Her global education and exposure to international institutions are widely seen as part of her preparation for future state leadership roles, shaping her into a modern, globally aware monarch.
