Former Australian Test batsman Damien Martyn, a cricket legend, is currently in critical condition after being diagnosed with meningitis.
The 54-year-old was rushed to the hospital and placed in an induced coma after suddenly falling ill while lying down on Boxing Day last week.
Martyn, who had a remarkable career playing 67 Tests and 208 one-day internationals, was struck by a condition that is both severe and potentially deadly.
Meningitis, which causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, has left his family and friends deeply concerned for his well-being.
Speaking to The Australian, close friend and Test great Adam Gilchrist shared a heart-wrenching update: “He’s receiving the best treatment possible,” he said, his voice filled with sorrow. “Amanda (his partner) and his family are well aware of the outpouring of love and prayers from everyone. They are truly grateful for the support during this difficult time.”
Darren Lehmann, a long-time teammate and friend of Martyn, also expressed his emotional support through social media. “Sending love and prayers… stay strong, legend. Keep fighting. My heart is with you and your family,” Lehmann posted on X, his words filled with raw emotion.

Known for his elegant stroke play, Martyn was a key figure in Australia’s golden era of cricket. He not only scored 13 centuries but was also part of the unforgettable 2003 World Cup victory, where he played a crucial role with a match-winning 88 not out in the final against India. His career was defined by brilliance, and he earned the respect of fans and teammates alike.
Yet, despite his cricketing triumphs, Martyn has kept a low profile since his retirement in 2006, choosing a quiet life away from the spotlight.
