Chris Martin, the lead singer of global rock sensation Coldplay, recently got candid and acknowledged how the band is an “easy target” for critics.
Known for his distinct voice and years of chart-topping hits with Coldplay, Martin reflected on the band’s public reception in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.
The 47-year-old British rocker said the band is still sometimes seen as an easy target for criticism, even though they are one of the biggest bands in the world.
He quipped, “It would be terrible if we lived in a society where everyone had to [like the same thing]. We’re a very, very easy, safe target. We’re not going to bite back.”
Expanding on this, Martin explained, “Anything you do, someone says it’s great and someone says it’s terrible. I think [The Times is] correct [and we’re] doing what we can to change that… We’re obsessed with getting better and better.”
“So criticism is essential, and although we kind of had some hardcore stuff, I now, nine months later, love the fact that we’ve got it, and we just want to try to make us a bit more sufferable,” he added.
“We are four white, middle-class men from England. We deserve to take some s***** for what our people have done. There’s a reason we get to play all around the world, and part of it is not necessarily very healthy,” the In My Place crooner concluded.
Coldplay still has many fans despite Martin’s comments, and the band’s Music of the Spheres tour has sold over 12 million tickets since March 2022, earning more than a billion dollars.
According to the report of People magazine, this makes it the highest-grossing rock tour of all time and the most-attended tour ever.
For the unversed, Coldplay’s albums, Viva la Vida, Death and All His Friends, were a big success.
Additionally, the band’s 2002 album A Rush of Blood to the Head earned the award for Best Alternative Rock Album, and its song Clocks won the Record of the Year award at the Grammys.
It is pertinent to mention that their latest album, Moon Music, was dropped in October this year, which reached the top of the Billboard 200 charts.
