SKARDU: Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that his party’s relationship with Gilgit-Baltistan goes beyond politics and is rooted in generations of connection, pledging to continue that bond in the future.
Addressing an election rally in Skardu, the former foreign minister outlined his views on national politics, the economy, defence, foreign policy and development in the region.
Bilawal said that during his tenure as foreign minister, he observed international interest in Pakistan’s Benazir Income Support Programme, which he described as a model for social protection systems abroad. He added that it was concerning that some political parties in Pakistan reportedly consider ending such welfare initiatives.
He said economic development must focus on uplifting lower-income groups rather than concentrating benefits among the wealthy, arguing that inclusive growth is essential for overall national progress.
Commenting on regional affairs, Bilawal expressed concern over ongoing conflicts in Iran, Lebanon and Palestine, saying the Muslim world is facing both economic and humanitarian pressures due to multiple crises. He prayed for peace in the region.
He also referred to Pakistan’s defence history, saying the country’s nuclear programme began under former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, while former prime minister Benazir Bhutto played a key role in advancing the missile programme, which he said strengthened Pakistan’s deterrence capability.
Criticising former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s era, Bilawal referenced the presence of foreign bases and the aftermath of the Salala incident, stressing that Pakistan must not compromise on its sovereignty.
On Gilgit-Baltistan, he said local resources belong first to the people of the region and that greater autonomy could accelerate development. He also called for extending the benefits of the 18th Constitutional Amendment to Gilgit-Baltistan.
Highlighting Sindh government initiatives, he said a housing project of 2 million homes is among the largest in the world, with climate-resilient housing being built for flood victims and property rights being transferred to women as a key social reform.
On healthcare, he said public hospitals in Sindh are providing free and improved treatment, reducing the need for patients to seek medical care abroad.
Regarding energy, he said Gilgit-Baltistan has significant hydropower potential that could meet local demand and supply electricity to other regions if properly developed.

He concluded by saying the people of Gilgit-Baltistan should have full control over their resources and future, calling it essential for both regional and national development.
