Argentina will now face England in the World Cup semifinals in Atlanta on Wednesday.

KANSAS CITY: Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 in extra time on Saturday to reach the World Cup semifinals, with Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez scoring late goals to end Switzerland’s impressive tournament run.

The victory kept Lionel Messi and Argentina’s title defense hopes alive as they moved one step closer to becoming the first team to win back to back World Cups since Brazil in 1962.

Argentina opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Alexis Mac Allister headed in Lionel Messi’s corner kick. Switzerland responded in the second half, with Dan Ndoye equalizing in the 67th minute after a quick attacking move.

The game remained level until extra time, when Alvarez scored a stunning long range goal in the 112th minute to put Argentina ahead. Martinez added another goal nine minutes later to secure the victory.

Switzerland’s chances became harder after Breel Embolo was sent off in the 72nd minute following a second yellow card for simulation. The team had reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 1954.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made several important saves as Switzerland pushed for another goal. Despite strong pressure from Argentina, Switzerland held on until the final moments of extra time.
