Anna Paquin is speaking out about the lasting toll of child stardom following the death of Hayden Panettiere, calling attention to a pattern she believes Hollywood has failed to address.

In an Instagram post on Friday, August 21, Paquin, who won an Oscar at age 11 for her role in The Piano, wrote, “It’s not a coincidence that so many former, specifically presexualized female, child ‘stars’ have profoundly sad lives and untimely ends. We were not as protected by the ‘systems’ that look great on paper, as we are supposed to be.”

She referenced Panettiere alongside two other former child performers who died before turning 40, Michelle Trachtenberg and Daveigh Chase, though she referred to them only by initials, later clarifying that was simply due to Instagram’s character limits rather than any deeper meaning.

Paquin, 44, described former child stars as belonging to a “strange small club” and offered direct support to anyone in the industry who has struggled with similar experiences.

“You are worthy of support no matter how our industry made us feel. Literally DM me. I believe you and I will stand by your side.”

She later added a clarifying note to her post explaining that her comments were specifically about the sexualization of children within the entertainment industry, saying, “I’m not implying damage is not done outside of the context of entertainment,” and that a broader discussion would require “a longer post for a different moment.”

Melissa Gilbert, who began acting as a child on Little House on the Prairie, shared Paquin’s post and echoed the call for change.

“Thank you Anna. Someone has to say something. Someone has to change this. Someone has to help.”

Other former child performers, including Alyssa Milano, Mara Wilson and Christy Carlson Romano, voiced support for Paquin’s message as well.

Panettiere died on August 16 at age 36, after being found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.

Dispatch audio referenced an “overdose” and “cardiac arrest” around the time of her death, though her official cause and manner of death have not yet been determined, an autopsy found no signs of trauma, and police have said there’s no indication of foul play.

The Drug Enforcement Administration has since become involved in the investigation.
