Alaska deep-sea “Golden Orb” mystery unlocked by researchers

Scientists have finally decoded one of the ocean’s most baffling enigmas after a mysterious “golden orb” discovered deep off the coast of Alaska was confirmed to be not extraterrestrial in origin, but the remnants of a rarely understood deep-sea sea anemone.

The astonishing discovery was made in August 2023 during an expedition aboard NOAA’s research vessel Okeanos Explorer, while scientists were surveying a submerged seamount in the Gulf of Alaska at an extreme depth of over two miles beneath the ocean surface.

Using advanced remotely operated underwater vehicles, researchers unexpectedly encountered a glowing, dome-like golden structure firmly attached to a rock on the seafloor, surrounded by deep-sea sponges. Measuring roughly four inches across, the object featured a small rupture at its base instantly triggering intense scientific curiosity.

Initial theories ranged from an unknown biological egg casing to a completely undiscovered life stage in marine evolution.

Due to its extraordinary and puzzling appearance, the specimen was carefully extracted and transported to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History for high-level scientific investigation.

What followed was a complex, multi-layered scientific probe involving genetic sequencing, morphological scrutiny, and deep-ocean biological expertise. A previously collected similar specimen from 2021 was also re-examined to support comparative analysis.

Breakthrough DNA sequencing revealed that the enigmatic golden structure was genetically linked to deep-sea sea anemones, specifically the species Relicanthus daphneae. Further mitochondrial genome mapping confirmed an almost identical genetic signature, effectively resolving the mystery.

Researchers concluded that the surreal golden formation was created through a slow biological process in which the anemone secreted a sticky, protective substance over time. Layer by layer, this material accumulated, eventually forming the striking orb-like shell that initially defied explanation.

The species Relicanthus daphneae first identified in the 1970s and formally classified in 2006 inhabits some of the most extreme and least explored regions of the ocean, often near hydrothermal vent systems. It is known for its elongated, flowing tentacles that can extend several feet in length.

Marine scientists describe the discovery as a powerful reminder of how much of Earth’s deep ocean remains uncharted. They emphasize that such findings highlight an unseen biological world still full of hidden  evolving mysteries many of which are only now beginning to surface through advanced deep-sea exploration and genetic science.
