Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive condition that affects how the intestines function. It is a long-term disorder that can cause discomfort but does not permanently damage the digestive system. IBS can affect people of all ages and often varies in severity from person to person.

The exact cause of IBS is not fully known, but it is believed to be linked to problems with gut sensitivity, irregular muscle contractions in the intestines, stress, hormonal changes, or certain food triggers. In some cases, symptoms may appear after an infection or during periods of emotional stress.

Common symptoms of IBS include abdominal pain or cramping, bloating, excessive gas, diarrhea, constipation, or alternating episodes of both. Many people notice that their symptoms improve after a bowel movement. Some individuals may also experience fatigue, nausea, or a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying.

IBS symptoms can be triggered by certain foods such as fatty meals, caffeine, dairy products, or spicy foods. Stress and anxiety can also worsen symptoms, making lifestyle management an important part of treatment. Keeping a food diary and identifying personal triggers can help in managing the condition.

Although IBS can be uncomfortable, it is usually manageable through dietary changes, regular physical activity, stress control, and proper hydration. In some cases, doctors may recommend medications to relieve specific symptoms. Anyone experiencing persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or blood in stools should seek medical advice, as these may indicate conditions other than IBS.
