Two tiny seeds, one big kitchen decision pumpkin or sunflower?

Snack aisles are full of options, but two small seeds keep showing up in kitchens everywhere pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Both are easy to toss into daily meals, but which one deserves a permanent spot in your pantry?

Both seeds share a mild, nutty, slightly sweet flavor, which makes them easy to mix into almost any meal or snack. A standard serving for either is about one ounce, roughly a quarter cup.

Popular ways people are using them day to day include:

    • Sprinkled over oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal at breakfast
    • Blended into a morning smoothie
    • Tossed into soups, salads, or grain bowls
    • Mixed into homemade granola or baked goods
    • Turned into a spreadable seed butter
    • Eaten straight out of the bag as a quick snack

Home cooks often lean toward pumpkin seeds, sometimes called pepitas, for their satisfying crunch in salads and grain bowls. Sunflower seeds tend to show up more in trail mixes, baked goods, and as a topping for smoothie bowls, due to its smaller size and softer bite. Neither seed requires special prep beyond keeping them in a sealed container to stay fresh longer.

If you’re adding either seed to your routine for the first time, ease into it gradually rather than piling on a large handful right away, Introducing new foods too quickly can sometimes lead to a bit of stomach discomfort, so a slow, steady addition tends to work best.
