Forget perfect superheroes—Hugh Jackman says it’s the messy, broken characters that truly keep him hooked.
While promoting The Death of Robin Hood alongside Jodie Comer, the actor opened up about why he’s drawn to complicated antiheroes, admitting, “I am fascinated by them.”
For Jackman, the obsession started long before Wolverine. “I go back to even Star Wars as a kid, it was, ‘Who’s Han Solo? That’s an interesting character.’ I was very intrigued by them,” he said, adding that Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven also left a lasting impression.
His latest role takes that fascination even further. In The Death of Robin Hood, Jackman plays an aging, battle-scarred Robin Hood confronting the emotional cost of a lifetime of violence. Fans of Logan may notice familiar themes—and Jackman agrees.
“I really love that — because Logan, I had a lot of say in where we were going with that, and I think this takes it even further, but there are some definite parallels there.”
The film also gave the actor a chance to reflect on life beyond the screen. “There’s a beauty to death, to the ending,” Jackman said during the conversation.
As Jodie Comer quietly added, “Letting go.”
“Letting go, exactly,” Jackman replied. “Being able to let go of it and going into that space is meditative, calming and really healing actually.”
It turns out Robin Hood isn’t just fighting his final battle—he’s teaching Wolverine a few life lessons too. The Death of Robin Hood is now playing in theaters.
