U.S. President Donald Trump remarks about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sparked strong political reactions in Italy on Friday.

Italy Government leaders, coalition partners, and opposition figures all criticized the comments and defended Italy institutions.

The controversy began after Trump, in a phone interview with Italian broadcaster La7, said that Meloni had “begged” to take a photo with him. He also said she wanted the photo very badly and suggested he agreed out of sympathy.

He further added that she was likely happy he spoke to her during the G7 summit and said he was not required to speak with her. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni quickly rejected the remarks in a video message shared on social media.

She called Trump statements completely false and said she was surprised by them. She also said she did not understand why he would speak in that way about an ally. Meloni added that neither she nor Italy would ever “beg” anyone.

BREAKING. All hell breaks loose between Donald Trump and Giorgia Meloni. 🇮🇹 🇺🇸

Trump told La7 tv that apparently “Meloni begged to have a picture with me at the G7, I felt sorry for her”.

Meloni’s scathing response: “I am shocked by Trump’s utterly fabricated words. I am sorry…

The issue also led to a diplomatic response from Italy. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani cancelled a planned visit to the United States, saying the country could not accept insults directed at Italy.

Defense Minister Guido Crosetto also defended Meloni and said Trump comments were damaging for both countries and their alliance.

Several leaders from Meloni coalition also spoke out. They described Trump remarks as unfair and unacceptable and strongly supported the Prime Minister. Some said Italy deserves respect and should not be spoken about in this way.

Opposition leaders also reacted, saying the comments were inappropriate and harmful to Italy image. Giuseppe Conte called the remarks unacceptable, while Carlo Calenda said he did not believe Meloni had ever made such a request. Other lawmakers expressed solidarity with the prime minister and criticized the tone used by Trump.

Some opposition figures also pointed to Meloni foreign policy approach, saying the situation reflected her close relationship with Washington. They argued the incident showed deeper political tensions in Italy’s international relations.

The controversy has created rare unity in Italian politics, with leaders from different sides agreeing in their criticism of Trump statements and in their support for the Italian Prime Minister.
