SpaceX has agreed to acquire SpaceX, the company behind the AI-powered coding platform Cursor, in a $60 billion all-stock transaction, according to reports.
The deal represents a major strategic expansion for SpaceX into the artificial intelligence sector, signaling its growing ambition beyond space exploration into advanced software and enterprise AI tools. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.
Cursor has rapidly established itself as one of the most influential AI coding platforms, enabling developers to streamline programming tasks through intelligent code generation, editing, and automation. Its strong adoption across enterprise clients has fueled its fast-paced commercial growth.
The acquisition also highlights a significant milestone for Pakistan’s tech ecosystem, as Cursor was co-founded by Pakistani-born entrepreneur Sualeh Asif.
Originally from Karachi, Asif studied at Nixor College before attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he co-founded Anysphere with three fellow students. He also represented Pakistan at the International Mathematical Olympiad between 2016 and 2018.
SpaceX’s latest move reflects its accelerating focus on artificial intelligence, following earlier integrations with xAI and other AI-driven initiatives. The company is increasingly positioning itself within the rapidly expanding market for developer-focused AI solutions, which has become one of the most competitive segments in the tech industry.
Reports indicate that Cursor has achieved strong financial traction, with annualized business-to-business revenue estimated at around $2.6 billion, underscoring its rapid enterprise adoption and investor confidence.
Prior to the acquisition, SpaceX had already established collaboration arrangements with Cursor, including an option-based agreement tied to the company’s valuation. The latest development formalizes that relationship through a full equity-based purchase.
The transaction will be completed entirely in SpaceX shares, with no reliance on cash proceeds from recent fundraising activity.
Cursor has drawn backing from prominent global investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive Capital, Nvidia, Google, Accel, and the OpenAI Startup Fund, reflecting its strong positioning within the global AI startup ecosystem.
Following the acquisition, SpaceX is expected to integrate Cursor’s capabilities with its broader AI initiatives, including potential alignment with xAI’s Grok-based systems to enhance automation and software development efficiency.
The deal marks a defining moment in SpaceX’s evolving AI strategy while also bringing renewed attention to a Pakistani-origin co-founder at the center of one of the most high-profile technology acquisitions in recent years.
