The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has announced the launch of the nationwide District Football Championship 2026 as part of its efforts to revive grassroots football, discover emerging talent, and strengthen the country’s domestic football structure.

Speaking at a press conference at the PFF headquarters, Chief Operating Officer Muhammad Shahid Niaz Khokhar said that all four provincial football associations, along with the regions of Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, are represented on a dedicated committee formed to ensure the successful organization of the tournament. Representatives from all provincial football associations attended the meeting virtually.

Khokhar said that for the first time in Pakistan’s football history, the federation will provide full professional, technical, and administrative support to districts to help organize the championship. He credited PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani and provincial and regional football leaders for their role in shaping the initiative, describing it as a major step toward rebuilding the country’s football system from the grassroots level.

He said the championship aims to create opportunities for local players, strengthen domestic football, and establish a sustainable pathway for talent development. District Football Associations will organize the competitions, while the PFF will provide logistical and administrative assistance. Regular consultations and meetings will also be held to ensure coordination between districts, provinces, and the federation.

According to Khokhar, the District Football Championship 2026 is expected to strengthen grassroots football structures, fulfil constitutional requirements at the district level, verify genuine football clubs, identify talented players across the country, improve the capacity of District Football Associations, enhance cooperation among football bodies, and increase the use of modern technology in competition management.

He added that the Pakistan Football Referee Association will provide qualified referees to maintain professional standards throughout the tournament. Following the completion of the district championship, the PFF plans to organize the National Club Championship as the next stage in the player development system.

Talented players identified during the district competitions will receive structured training under qualified PFF coaches to prepare them for opportunities at different national team levels. Khokhar said the system will allow players to progress from district football to club football and eventually represent Pakistan through a merit-based pathway.

He also announced the National U17 Championship, scheduled for the first week of September 2026, as another major initiative to strengthen youth football development. Each of the four provinces will field two teams, while Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir will each enter one team. The PFF will cover all expenses for participating teams, while provincial and regional bodies will select their squads through proper procedures.

Outstanding performers from the U17 Championship will be considered for Pakistan’s youth teams competing in the SAFF U17 Championship and AFC U17 Qualifiers. Khokhar said these initiatives reflect the federation’s commitment to providing young footballers with greater opportunities to develop their skills and represent Pakistan successfully on the international stage.
