Rubio stressed the need to remove naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz.

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that Pakistan is playing a key mediating role in talks with Iran, adding that Field Marshal Asim Munir is traveling to Tehran and remains in continuous contact with relevant stakeholders.

Speaking to the media, Rubio said that any decision on a potential agreement rests with Iran, expressing hope that a deal could eventually be reached.

He said Iran’s imposition of tolls or restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz would be unacceptable, adding that the United States is also using United Nations platforms to address concerns related to the strategic waterway.

Rubio stressed the need to remove naval mines from the Strait of Hormuz and said alternative plans must be in place in case Iran refuses cooperation to keep the waterway open.

He further said that the United States is working closely with Pakistan on negotiations with Iran and reiterated Washington’s desire to reach an agreement, while also emphasizing the need for a “Plan B” in case talks fail.
