Hantavirus is found worldwide and usually spreads when people come into contact with urine or droppings of infected rodents like mice and rats.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus has an incubation period of one to eight weeks and then suddenly causes flu-like symptoms such as high fever, strong muscle pain, tiredness, and headaches.
In some cases, it can lead to a serious and sometimes deadly lung condition known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. There is no specific cure, but early medical care can improve the chances of survival.
Recently, a suspected outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean has caused the deaths of three people, while another patient is in critical condition in intensive care.
The World Health Organization confirmed that one case has been tested positive in the lab, while five more suspected cases are still under investigation. Among the six affected individuals, three have died and one is receiving treatment in South Africa.
The WHO said it is aware of the situation and is supporting efforts to manage the public health issue on the cruise vessel. The organization has also started an investigation to find the cause of the outbreak.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Dutch Foreign Ministry confirmed that two of the victims were Dutch nationals, but further details were not shared.
