Moya Brennan the celebrated Irish vocalist best known as the lead singer of the iconic folk band Clannad, has passed away at the age of 73.

Her family confirmed that she died peacefully at her residence in County Donegal, surrounded by her loved ones. She had been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis in recent years and was reportedly preparing for a possible double lung transplant.

Born on August 4, 1952, in Dublin as Máire Philomena Ní Bhraonáin, Brennan was raised in a highly musical household and later trained at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

In 1970, she co-founded Clannad alongside her brothers Pól and Ciarán and her uncles Noel and Pádraig Ó Dúgáin, forming a group that would go on to shape the global identity of Irish folk music.

The band achieved international recognition in 1983 with their breakthrough album Magical Ring and the globally acclaimed single “Theme from Harry’s Game,” which reached the UK Top 5 and introduced Irish-language music to a worldwide audience.

Their success further expanded into television and film scoring, most notably for the series Robin of Sherwood, establishing Clannad as pioneers of atmospheric Celtic soundtracks.

Brennan also belongs to one of Ireland’s most distinguished musical families, with her sister Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, known professionally as Enya, achieving global fame as a solo artist.

Throughout her career, she collaborated with several renowned international musicians, including Bruce Hornsby, Ronan Keating, Robert Plant, Shane MacGowan, and Bono of U2.

She launched her solo career in 1992 with the album Máire and continued to perform, record, and contribute to film and television music over several decades.

Beyond her artistic achievements, Brennan was widely respected for her philanthropic work, supporting organisations focused on disability care and addiction recovery. She often spoke candidly about her personal struggles and credited her Christian faith for providing strength throughout her life.

She is survived by her husband, British photojournalist Tim Jarvis, and their two children.
