UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Thursday, focusing on efforts to restore maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz after a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran.
Starmer made the call from Qatar, where he has been holding meetings with Gulf leaders and military officials, according to a Downing Street statement. During the conversation, he highlighted regional discussions and the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the strait, as well as the UK’s efforts to unite international partners around a practical plan.
Both leaders agreed that, following the ceasefire and the decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, attention should now turn to securing a lasting resolution. They also emphasized the need for a concrete plan to resume shipping operations in the strait as quickly as possible.
The statement added that Starmer and Trump will remain in close contact and plan to speak again soon.
Tensions in the region have remained high since Israel and the United States launched an offensive against Iran on February 28, which resulted in at least 3,000 deaths, including that of the former supreme leader.
Iran responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military bases, causing casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
Earlier this week, Trump announced a two-week ceasefire, stating that Iran had presented a “workable” 10-point proposal. Negotiations are expected to determine whether a longer-term agreement can be achieved.
