The study analyzed data from nearly 23,000 individuals collected under the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

A new study highlights the importance of sleep in preventing chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, especially as people age and the risk of health issues increases.

Published in the medical journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, the research examined the relationship between sleep duration and insulin sensitivity.

Experts emphasize that sleep is not only vital for physical rest but also plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels.

The study analyzed data from nearly 23,000 individuals collected under the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Researchers investigated how nightly sleep hours affect glucose metabolism and whether extra sleep on weekends offers additional health benefits.

Findings suggest that an average of 7 hours and 19 minutes of sleep per night is optimal for reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes, while approximately 8 hours on weekends provides additional benefits. This sleep duration improves insulin sensitivity and helps lower the likelihood of developing the disease.

The study also indicates that for individuals who get insufficient sleep on regular weekdays, adding 2 or more extra hours of sleep on days off can still have positive effects on the body, particularly for those with inconsistent sleep schedules.

Experts stress that regular and high-quality sleep is essential for overall health. Maintaining a consistent sleep-wake routine not only balances bodily functions but also plays a preventive role against conditions like Type 2 diabetes.
