On the edge of defeat and under immense pressure, Aryna Sabalenka delivered a performance of sheer resilience, saving a match point to defeat Elena Rybakina and finally capture her maiden Indian Wells Open title in a gripping three-set thriller.

The world number one overcame a set deficit to claim a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) victory, ending a frustrating run of defeats against Rybakina in major finals.

The Kazakh had previously dominated their title clashes, including victories at Indian Wells 2023 and the Australian Open earlier this year.

Sunday’s final lived up to expectations, unfolding as a high-intensity contest marked by powerful baseline exchanges and minimal margins.

After dropping the opening set, Sabalenka responded with greater aggression and composure, turning the match around in the second to force a decider.

The final set saw both players trade momentum in a tense battle. Sabalenka initially secured a crucial break, but Rybakina responded with strong returning to level the score at 5-5, saving multiple break points to keep her hopes alive.

Despite the setback, Sabalenka held her nerve, forcing a tiebreak where the match reached its peak intensity. Facing elimination at 5-6, she produced a stunning backhand winner to save match point, before taking control of the closing exchanges with authoritative shot-making.

The Belarusian later acknowledged the physical and mental challenge of the contest, particularly under demanding conditions, but expressed satisfaction at her ability to deliver in the decisive moments.

Rybakina, who had controlled the early stages with disciplined serving and precision, admitted her level dipped as the match progressed allowing momentum to shift.

With this victory, Sabalenka now heads to the Miami Open aiming to complete the prestigious “Sunshine Double.”

Meanwhile, Rybakina’s strong campaign ensures a rise to world number two, moving ahead of Iga Swiatek in the latest rankings.
