Amazon’s autonomous vehicle division, Zoox, is accelerating its U.S. deployment by expanding robotaxi testing to Dallas and Phoenix and establishing a centralized operations hub in Arizona.

The move leverages advanced sensor fusion, AI-driven perception, and fleet telemetry systems to enhance autonomous navigation and passenger safety, positioning Zoox for growth in the increasingly competitive self-driving mobility market.

With this expansion, Zoox will now operate test programs in 10 U.S. markets, including Las Vegas, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Austin, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C.

In Dallas and Phoenix, the company will initially deploy retrofitted SUV prototypes for manual mapping and data collection, before gradually transitioning to autonomous testing with safety drivers onboard.

Zoox is also opening new depots in both cities and launching a “Fusion Center” in Scottsdale, Arizona, which will function as a centralized operations hub for fleet telemetry, remote assistance, and rider engagement. The expansion is projected to create hundreds of technology-focused jobs.

Phoenix and Dallas provide testing environments distinct from dense urban areas like San Francisco, featuring sprawling road networks and extreme environmental conditions such as high heat and dust.

Zoox said these conditions will provide critical validation for its LiDAR systems, AI perception algorithms, battery management, and autonomous control software.

To date, Zoox has logged over 1 million autonomous miles and served more than 300,000 passengers, leveraging machine learning, sensor fusion, and advanced vehicle control systems to ensure safety and efficiency.

This announcement comes ahead of a national autonomous vehicle safety forum on Tuesday, which will include CEOs from Zoox, Waymo, and Aurora to discuss regulatory frameworks and the future of autonomous mobility technologies.
