UK Gen Z flocks to the discussion giant

Reddit has rocketed past TikTok to become the UK’s fourth most visited social media platform, fueled by a surge in Gen Z users and a seismic shift in online search habits.

Once notorious for anonymous rants and chaotic threads, the platform has reinvented itself as a dynamic hub for authentic advice, niche communities, and real-world insights.

According to Ofcom, Reddit now touches 60% of UK internet users, up from just over a third in 2023 an 88% surge in two years. Among 18- to 24-year-olds, it ranks as the sixth most visited site, with more than three-quarters of this demographic actively engaging.

The platform’s meteoric rise is underpinned by strategic algorithm shifts and AI partnerships. Google’s 2024 search overhaul, prioritizing discussion forums, has catapulted Reddit into prominence, while collaborations with Google and OpenAI allow the platform’s content to power AI models, cementing its role as a go-to knowledge repository in the AI era.

Changing user habits also play a pivotal role. Young users are increasingly rejecting curated influencer content in favor of raw, human perspectives.

Topics like parenting, skincare, lifestyle, and sports have become engagement magnets, with women now constituting over half of the UK audience. In particular, 71% of female users actively explore beauty and self-care topics, driving explosive growth in specialized UK subreddits.

Jen Wong, Reddit’s COO, highlighted the platform’s transformation from a male-dominated forum to a balanced, mainstream ecosystem.

“Reddit began as a tech-and-gaming space skewed male,” Wong explained. “Today, it’s vibrant, diverse, and one in three users are Gen Z women.”

Reddit’s influence extends beyond discussion. Users increasingly rely on the platform for life guidance, from first-time renting to personal finance and wedding planning.

UK subreddits dedicated to pregnancy and parenting have doubled, while sports communities especially Premier League subreddits have logged over one billion extra views in a year.

Women’s football subreddits, including Arsenal Women and the Lionesses, have seen views skyrocket, doubling year-on-year.

Even political actors are taking note. The UK government launched its official account, UKGovNews, posting updates on pressing issues like the cost of living, rail fares, and immigration.

Despite its mainstream evolution, Reddit remains raw and unfiltered, with heated debates and clashing viewpoints. Wong emphasizes the platform’s self-regulatory culture:

“Every Redditor is a moderator. ‘Be civil’ is the most common rule across communities.”

Positioning itself as an antidote to AI-generated content, Reddit thrives on authenticity, diversity, and the messy, human pulse of the internet.

“It’s unpolished, opinionated, and sometimes chaotic but that’s the essence of Reddit,” Wong said.
