Elon Musk’s most controversial moves of 2025

Elon Musk remained a defining and divisive figure in global politics and technology throughout 2025, a year marked by high-profile clashes, provocative statements, and controversies that reverberated far beyond Silicon Valley.

From Washington to Brussels, and from social media to international diplomacy, Musk’s actions repeatedly ignited public debate and drew fierce criticism. Below are some of the most widely discussed and controversial moments involving the billionaire entrepreneur this year.

Alleged Nazi Salute at Trump Inauguration Rally

In January, Musk attended Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration. While the ceremony itself passed without incident, a celebratory rally at Washington’s Capital One Arena sparked immediate backlash.

Footage circulated online showing Musk making a straight-arm gesture with his hand over his heart — a movement many viewers compared to a Nazi salute. The moment triggered intense debate, with supporters insisting it was misinterpreted, while critics accused Musk of engaging in extremist symbolism. Others pointed to Musk’s public comments about being on the autism spectrum as a possible explanation for an awkward gesture, though disability advocates cautioned against using neurodivergence as a defense for political behavior.

Days later, Musk intensified criticism by appearing virtually at a campaign event for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, where he praised party leader Alice Weidel and criticized multiculturalism.

    Federal Worker Email Controversy

In February, Musk again made headlines after amplifying an internal government email sent to federal employees with the subject line: “What did you do last week?” The message requested detailed weekly work summaries.

Musk reposted the email on social media, warning that “failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.” Critics quickly noted that the original email contained no such threat, accusing Musk of intimidation and misinformation amid already tense debates over government workforce reform.

    Public Break with President Trump

Musk’s once-close relationship with President Trump deteriorated sharply by mid-2025. After donating heavily to Trump’s 2024 campaign and accepting a senior role leading the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk broke ranks with the administration over fiscal policy.

The rift became public when Musk labeled Trump’s sweeping spending bill a “disgusting abomination,” prompting a heated exchange between the two men and marking a dramatic collapse of one of the most influential political alliances of the past election cycle.

    Call to Cancel Netflix

Later in the year, Musk waded into another cultural controversy by urging followers to “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.”

The statement was linked to conservative backlash against the animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, which features a transgender character. Media watchdogs and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups accused Musk of fueling moral panic and targeting inclusive storytelling.

Escalating Feud With UK Prime Minister

Musk’s conflict with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer escalated into a diplomatic flashpoint. Musk accused Starmer of covering up grooming gang scandals during his tenure as Director of Public Prosecutions — claims UK officials strongly denied.

The billionaire went on to accuse the British government of “two-tier policing,” expressed support for far-right figures, and even suggested the United States should “liberate” Britain from what he described as tyranny, drawing condemnation across the UK political spectrum.

    Clash With the European Union

Musk closed out 2025 locked in a bitter confrontation with the European Union after regulators fined X €120 million under the Digital Services Act. The EU cited deceptive blue-check verification practices and failures in transparency.

Musk responded by calling the ruling “insane,” attacking EU officials personally, and declaring that the European Union itself should be abolished. The dispute has been described by analysts as one of the most significant regulatory showdowns between a major tech CEO and Brussels to date.
