The tennis world is bracing for the end of an era. Swiss maestro Stan Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam champion famed for his blistering one-handed backhand, has confirmed that 2026 will be his final season on the professional circuit.

At 40, Stan Wawrinka is ready to write the “final chapter” of a career that has inspired millions and defied the dominance of the sport’s Big Three Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.

From a young talent turning professional in 2002 to a player who etched his name into tennis history, Stan Wawrinka’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.

He captured the Australian Open in 2014 with a stunning victory over Nadal, triumphed against Djokovic at the 2015 French Open, and clinched the 2016 US Open in a masterclass of grit and precision.

Along the way, he amassed 16 tour-level titles, including a Masters 1000 trophy in Monte Carlo, and earned Olympic gold in doubles at the 2008 Beijing Games with Roger Federer.

But it isn’t just the trophies that define Stan Wawrinka’s legacy. It’s the moments of sheer brilliance the ability to rise to the occasion, to topple the world number ones, and to leave fans in awe with his iconic backhand.

“Every book needs an ending,” Wawrinka shared on X. “It’s time to write the final chapter of my professional tennis career. 2026 will be my last year on tour. I still want to push my limits and finish this journey on the best note possible.”

In recent years, injuries have taken their toll, and Stan Wawrinka now sits outside the top 150. Yet his determination remains unshaken.

His fans can witness one last display of his artistry when he begins the 2026 season at the United Cup team competition in Perth on January 2.

Wawrinka’s announcement is more than a farewell; it is a celebration of resilience, passion, and the enduring spirit of a champion who has brought joy, drama, and unforgettable moments to tennis lovers worldwide.

As the curtain prepares to fall, the world awaits to see the Swiss legend take his final bow, one elegant backhand at a time.
