An accident involving one of his oil rigs triggers a chain of events that leads to worldwide flooding as enormous ice shelves collide with coastlines. However, around halfway through the film, the story is revealed to be a play within the film.
The events involving Digger are actually part of an in-universe stage production called Fossil Fools, with Cruise playing actor Curtis Markson, who is portraying the real Digger Rockwell. The revelation changes the way the earlier scenes are understood.
The play is based on events that supposedly happened 25 years earlier, with the real Digger having become responsible for environmental destruction on a global scale.
The production attempts to revisit those events while also examining the consequences of climate negligence.Curtis is struggling with the role throughout the production.
He has studied hundreds of hours of interviews with the real Digger but feels that the stage version has turned the oil baron into a much broader caricature.
At the same time, Curtis is dealing with a personal crisis as he worries about his daughter, whose flight from Jamaica has gone missing during a Category 5 storm.Jesse Plemons’ character, Kenny, also becomes increasingly important to the story.
He is revealed to be Digger’s nephew and the billionaire financier behind the revival of Fossil Fools.
Kenny had seen the original production as a teenager and remembers cheering alongside the audience when his uncle’s character died on stage. The production eventually reaches its opening-night performance, with Digger dying by suicide in the play.
The audience reacts with a huge ovation, while Curtis learns that his daughter is safe. But the apparent happy ending does not last.
A warning alarm interrupts the celebrations and tells the audience to increase their air-filtration masks to level four.
The audience then leaves the theatre and enters a world that has been devastated by the environmental catastrophe depicted in the play. The final moments show that the disaster has not been undone simply because it has been turned into art.
The outside world remains flooded and dystopian, with grey skies, unrest and signs of a society struggling with the consequences of what happened. That contrast is central to the film’s ending.
Digger allows its characters to experience a moment of catharsis inside the theatre, but the alarm forces them to confront the reality waiting outside.
