iPhone as a Status Symbol in Pakistan

In a country where inflation and unemployment remain persistent concerns, a surprising trend has emerged among the youth: flaunting non-PTA-approved iPhones—devices incapable of using local SIM cards—as symbols of wealth and social status.

These “JV iPhones”, often imported and lacking the necessary Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) approval, cost significantly less than their officially registered counterparts. However, without PTA compliance, they cannot access cellular networks in Pakistan—unless buyers resort to temporary workarounds or rely solely on Wi-Fi.

“It’s like buying a Ferrari and leaving it in your garage. You can’t drive it, but hey, you can post it on Instagram,” said one university student who recently purchased a non-PTA iPhone 15 Pro Max.

According to social commentators and psychologists, it’s a combination of materialism, peer pressure, and toxic flex culture—especially rampant on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat.

Owning the latest iPhone, even if it can’t make a call, signals status, wealth, and an affiliation with global trends. In many circles, the device has become more of a fashion accessory than a communication tool.

“Most Pakistanis buy Non-PTA JV iPhones just to show that they are richer than others in society,” read a recent viral post by Startup Sindh, sparking heated debates online.

Experts warn that this trend reflects a deeper societal issue. When young people prioritize image over practicality, it can lead to financial strain, low self-esteem, and misplaced priorities. Many are spending entire savings or taking loans just to own a device that doesn’t even fully work in Pakistan.

“It’s about optics, not utility,” said a local tech retailer. “People would rather have the Pro Max without a SIM than a mid-range phone that actually works.”

    A Wake-Up Call:

This growing obsession highlights the influence of social media and digital peer validation. In a society where economic hardship is real, the choice to splurge on status symbols over essentials sends a worrying message.
