LOS ANGELES: The chilling smile behind one of horror’s most unforgettable clowns has gone silent. British actor Tim Curry, whose terrifying portrayal of Pennywise in Stephen King’s “It” frightened generations of viewers, died on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 80.

Curry’s death confirmed by his longtime manager and has sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow stars who remembered his remarkable career across film, television, theater and voice acting.

Curry became a global pop culture figure through his unforgettable roles, but Pennywise remains one of his most haunting performances. In the 1990 television adaptation of King’s “It”, he transformed the shape-shifting creature into a sinister clown whose disturbing grin, sharp voice and unpredictable behavior made the character a lasting symbol of horror.

Before terrifying audiences as Pennywise, Curry had already created another legendary character. He played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, the 1975 cult musical that became a defining part of his career. C

Curry originally performed the role onstage before bringing it to the big screen, where his bold performance helped turn the film into a lasting cultural phenomenon.

His career stretched far beyond horror. Curry appeared in “Clue”, “Annie”, “Legend”, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” and “Muppet Treasure Island”. He also built a respected theater career, earning three Tony Award nominations for productions including Amadeus, My Favorite Year and Spamalot. His distinctive voice also made him a sought-after performer in animated projects.

Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012 that affected his mobility and later relied on a wheelchair. Despite the setback, he continued working, particularly in voice acting, and remained connected with fans through public appearances and conventions.

Tributes quickly followed news of his death, as Susan Sarandon, Curry’s Rocky Horror co-star, remembered him as funny, original and deeply kind, praising the warmth he continued to show fans despite his health struggles.

Rob Schneider, who worked with Curry in Home Alone 2, also shared an emotional tribute. Schneider praised Curry’s extraordinary ability to perform the same scene in completely different ways and still make every version work. He called it an experience that changed how he understood acting.

“The great and wonderful Tim Curry has given his final bow. I have never known another actor who could say more with a knowing grin or a raised eyebrow than the splendid Tim Curry! he wrote on Instagram.

Curry leaves behind a legacy built on fearless characters, powerful performances and a voice audiences could recognize instantly.
