SEOUL: What began as a night out at a concert has turned into a controversy for BTS leader RM, after his appearance with bandmate J-Hope at Chris Brown’s Toronto show drew criticism from fans and prompted The Pixel Project to suspend him from its list of male role models against violence toward women.
The Pixel Project, a global nonprofit organization focused on ending violence against women, announced the suspension Wednesday. RM, whose full name is Kim Nam-joon, had been included in the organization’s “16 Male Role Models Helping to Stop Violence Against Women” list.
RM and J-Hope attended Brown’s concert in Toronto on Aug. 12. J-Hope shared footage from the performance on social media, while Brown later posted a photo with the two BTS members.

Their appearance sparked criticism among some BTS fans, who questioned their association with Brown because of his history of violence against women.
The Pixel Project said it waited for RM to publicly address the controversy before taking action. The organization said his continued silence was inconsistent with the accountability expected from someone recognized for promoting awareness about violence against women.
RM was previously recognized by the organization for efforts to address misogyny, support women in the arts and speak about violence against women in South Korea. The group said those efforts contributed to his inclusion on the role-model list.

The Pixel Project also said it would review and revise a 2025 Father’s Day opinion piece that featured RM as an example of an “imperfect” male role model.
The organization said it did not expect its role models to be perfect but emphasized that accountability was essential when public actions conflict with the values they represent.
The decision has divided BTS fans, known as ARMY, on social media. Some welcomed the suspension, arguing that RM should acknowledge concerns about his association with Brown. Others called the decision excessive and defended the singer, saying attendance at a concert does not necessarily amount to an endorsement of the performer’s conduct.
The debate has also led fans to revisit RM’s previous statements and work related to gender issues. Some questioned whether he should have been included on the role-model list, while others argued that his previous advocacy should be considered separately from the concert appearance.
The controversy has renewed discussion about the responsibility of major celebrities whose actions can influence millions of followers. The Pixel Project said BTS members have considerable cultural influence and therefore face greater expectations as public figures.
Brown has faced years of scrutiny over allegations and legal cases involving violence against women. His appearance with the BTS members has consequently become part of a broader debate over celebrity associations, accountability and public expectations.
Neither RM nor J-Hope had publicly responded to The Pixel Project’s decision as of Aug. 19. The controversy continues to generate debate among fans over whether the suspension was an appropriate response or an excessive reaction to the concert appearance.
