ITV icon Sheila Mathews has died at the age of 99 after serving the entertainment industry for decades, it has been confirmed.
It is pertinent to mention that the TV personality and actress was one of the first stars of commercial television in the UK.
Sheila began Friday’s Girl, a short programe built around her singing, when ITV launched in 1955.
The star’s death was announced with a a tribute to ‘Britain’s longest serving performer’ in Intermission magazine this week.
For the unversed, Sheila was originally a singer, musical-theatre and variety performer before moving into television.
Sheila was married to the late director Charles Reading, who died in 1999. She is survived by her two daughters Sally and Jane.
