‘The Odyssey’ Vs. ‘Oppenheimer’: Christopher Nolan hits in competition

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is on track to surpass the total domestic run of his 2023 film Oppenheimer in just 13 days, continuing a box office run that shows little sign of slowing as it heads into its third weekend.

The film posted $14.7 million on its second Monday in theatres, with Tuesday tracking above $16 million, putting its running domestic total at roughly $320.1 million.

By the end of Wednesday, The Odyssey is expected to cross $330 million, not only overtaking Oppenheimer‘s full domestic run but also becoming Nolan’s third-highest-grossing film at the North American box office, trailing only The Dark Knight ($534.9 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1 million).

The film has also become Matt Damon’s highest-grossing leading role at the domestic box office to date.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day now arriving in theatres and expected to open north of $200 million, The Odyssey‘s third weekend is projected to ease by as much as 50%, landing around $45 million.

Elsewhere on the chart, Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment’s Broadway capture film Hadestown placed second for Monday with $2.2 million, continuing a stronger-than-expected run for the filmed stage production, which had originally been planned as a limited five-night theatrical event before strong reviews and repeat viewership prompted an extended run.

The Odyssey‘s sustained performance continues a pattern of unusually strong holds throughout its run, having already posted the best second weekend of Nolan’s career and tied the post-pandemic record for consecutive weeks with a top-ten box office haul over $100 million.
