200,000 Canadians sign petition to strip Elon Musk’s citizenship

Over 200,000 Canadians have signed a parliamentary petition calling for the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship, citing his association with Donald Trump, The Guardian reported.

The petition, launched by author Qualia Reed and sponsored by New Democrat MP Charlie Angus, accuses Musk of working against Canada’s national interest by advising the US president.

Musk, born in South Africa, holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who is originally from Saskatchewan.

The petition argues that his alignment with Trump, who has made repeated threats towards Canadian sovereignty, justifies the revocation of his citizenship.

“Elon Musk has engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada,” the petition states. It further alleges that his role in the Trump administration makes him “a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty.”

Petitions in Canada require at least 500 signatures to be formally considered by Parliament. Reed’s petition far surpassed this threshold, gathering over 203,000 signatures by early Monday, with numbers continuing to rise. The petition remains open for signatures until 20 June.

The potential revocation of Musk’s citizenship would be unprecedented. Canadian law allows for citizenship to be revoked in cases of fraud or misrepresentation, but political alignment has not historically been a factor.

If Musk’s citizenship were revoked, he would have to wait 10 years before reapplying.
