The capital at a standstill

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has issued a stern warning against letting the PTI besiege the federal capital – a stance backed up by the preemptive arrest of Imran Khan's three sisters in Lahore under the MPO Ordinance.

Crucially, TTAP, the six-party opposition alliance, already holds a mandate from the PTI chief to negotiate with the power wielders.

This opens a window to strike a deal centred on restructuring the governance framework and resolving constitutional lacunas in the larger national interest.The residents of twin cities find themselves in a nail-biting predicament, waiting to see how three overlapping protest campaigns – by Jamaat-e-Islami, farmers and the PTI – will unfold within the span of a single week.

This prolonged standstill is dealing a severe blow to the local economy, as recurring threats to hold the federal capital hostage fly in the face of acceptable norms for the freedom of association.

Compounding these tensions, the federal government says it is mulling Governor.
