Daily vitamins may help to support a stronger, healthier body

Many people incorporate daily vitamins into their morning routine to help fill nutritional gaps, though nutrition experts say supplements work best as one part of an overall healthy lifestyle rather than a stand alone solution, according to Kayal Chandramohan, clinical nutrition manager at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.

Vitamins remain a major part of daily wellness routines and a multi-billion dollar industry, with many people turning to them for everyday nutritional support. The body needs 13 essential vitamins, so called because the body can only produce small amounts on its own, meaning the rest must come from diet or supplementation.

    Those 13 vitamins include vitamins A, C, D, E, and K, along with the B-complex vitamins: B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, B7 (biotin), B9 (folate), and B12 (cobalamin).

Chandramohan said biotin remains one of the most popular vitamins people add to their routine, largely for its role in supporting keratin production, which benefits hair health. Vitamin C is another frequent choice, valued for its role in supporting collagen production.

More broadly, she said B vitamins commonly support energy production and nervous system health, while folate plays a particularly important role for pregnant women in helping prevent neural tube defects. For immune support, she pointed to vitamins C and E as helpful for supporting wound healing.

Vitamins aren’t a substitute for a balanced diet, eating a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and dairy can naturally meet most people’s vitamin needs without additional supplementation.

Food groups provide macronutrients, which supply energy, while proteins serve as the body’s building blocks, functions vitamins don’t replicate. “By eating vitamins, you are not going to be full,” she said, noting that vitamins act more as supporting co-enzymes than sources of energy.

When shopping for supplements, price doesn’t necessarily reflect effectiveness since the body absorbs nutrients the same way whether they come from food or supplements depending on bio-availability.

Taking too many vitamins can lead to side effects like nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, or constipation. For most people, daily multi-vitamin paired with a balanced diet remains a simple, effective way to support overall health.
