A story of human kindness with animal from a decade ago has now been cast in metal, with a new sculpture installed over the river bed of the Big Almaty River, which flows into the Sayran reservoir in Kazakhstan.

In 2016, a dog fell into the reservoir in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and commercial hub, located in the country’s southeast near its borders with Kyrgyzstan and China.

The river boundary made with steep concrete walls and a strong current, left the dog unable to escape on its own.

A young man climbed down to help but found himself unable to climb back out. Several bystanders then stepped in, forming a human chain by linking arms and reaching down into the water. Together, they managed to pull both the dog and the man to safety.

Footage of the rescue spread widely at the time, drawing around 15 million views on the Daily Mail’s, Facebook page and another 6.5 million views across other platforms.

The sculpture was unveiled on March 26, 2026, ten years after the rescue took placea bronze monument named “Unity”or “Chain of Rescue“.

It depicts figures holding onto one another’s arms, representing unity and collective effort in the face of a crisis.

The project was privately funded, approved by the Almaty Department for the Development of Public Spaces, and supported by ForteBank.

According to a statement describing the installation, the concept centers on mutual support, solidarity, and unity, with the linked figures symbolizing how people can come together to overcome challenges.

The statement noted that the design draws from an image that resonated deeply with the public and reflects values many residents hold close.

Beyond honoring one specific rescue, the sculpture speaks to a simple idea that in urgent moments, strangers can step up for one another and help save lives.

The story also carries a message about compassion toward animals, framing the dog’s rescue as a reminder that all living beings deserve care and respect.

The installation joins a growing number of public art pieces around the world that commemorate real acts of everyday heroism rather than historical or political figures.
