KARACHI: Police have arrested three suspects allegedly involved in the killing of a young doctor during a robbery attempt near Teen Talwar in Karachi’s Clifton area, officials said on Wednesday.

The arrests were made from the jurisdiction of Defence Police Station as investigators continued their probe into the murder of 28-year-old Dr Akash, who was shot dead while resisting a robbery outside a private bank on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza said the suspects allegedly arrived at the crime scene on two motorcycles and carried out the robbery.

He said police gathered important evidence within 24 hours of the incident and completed the arrests within the following 36 hours.

According to the DIG, the suspects were already present near the bank when Dr Akash arrived. One of the accused allegedly conducted surveillance of the area before the robbery and shared details with his accomplices.

DIG Raza said investigators reviewed more than 100 CCTV recordings during the probe, which helped identify and track the suspects.

He added that the suspects allegedly used two motorcycles and a car during the crime.

Police also recovered a portion of the stolen cash from the arrested suspects, he said.

Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho said two more suspects had been identified and would be arrested soon.

He said CCTV footage played a key role in the investigation and helped authorities trace those involved in the murder case.

Discussing Karachi’s security measures, IGP Odho said the first phase of the Safe City project had been completed, with around 1,150 surveillance cameras installed, while the second phase was close to completion.

He said improved surveillance systems had helped strengthen law enforcement efforts and monitoring across the city.

Odho added that Karachi recorded 37 terrorism incidents last year, compared with seven incidents so far this year.

He further stated that street crime in Sindh declined by 11.8% during the first six months of the year, while crime incidents in Karachi’s Defence area also decreased after the installation of CCTV cameras.
