How parents can protect children’s eyes during summer vecation?

As summer holidays begin, many children spend more time on digital devices for entertainment, gaming, social media and online activities.

While screens have become a part of daily life, experts warn that long hours of screen use can affect children’s eye health.

Eye doctors say children often do not recognize early signs of vision problems or may think discomfort is normal. This makes it important for parents to notice changes in their habits and schedule regular eye checkups.

Spending several hours continuously looking at phones, tablets, computers or televisions can lead to digital eye strain. Children who use screens for long periods without breaks may experience tired eyes, headaches, blurry vision and difficulty focusing.

Experts recommend that children avoid spending too much time on screens without breaks. The 20-20-20 rule can help reduce eye strain after every 20 minutes of screen use, children should look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Parents should also encourage children to spend more time outdoors, stay physically active and maintain a healthy balance between screen activities and other daily routines.

Regular eye exams can help detect vision problems early and ensure children have clear eyesight for learning and everyday activities.

Summer also brings increased exposure to sunlight. Just like skin, eyes need protection from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Parents should encourage children to wear sunglasses with proper UV protection when spending time outdoors. Wearing a hat and staying in shaded areas during strong afternoon sunlight can also help protect eye health.

Experts say maintaining a healthy routine is one of the best ways to protect children’s vision. Summer activities should include outdoor play, physical movement, proper rest and regular breaks from screens.

Small changes in daily habits can help children maintain healthier eyes and reduce the risk of vision problems in the future.
