    Scary Mommy founder ‘Jill Smokler’ dies at 48 after battle with brain cancer

    Jill Smokler, the founder of the popular parenting website Scary Mommy, has died at the age of 48 after a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer.

    Her death was announced by Scary Mommy, which shared a statement from her family. They remembered her as a writer who changed the way people talked about motherhood and created a supportive space for parents around the world.

    Smokler launched Scary Mommy in 2008 while staying at home and raising her three children, she started as a personal blog soon grew into one of the most well-known parenting websites. The platform became popular for its honest and relatable stories about family life, parenting challenges, and everyday experiences.

    Her first blog post was published in March 2008. It helped build a community where mothers could openly share their feelings without worrying about being judged. Over time, Scary Mommy became a trusted source of parenting advice, stories, and discussions for millions of readers.

    In addition to her online work, Smokler was a successful author. She wrote the bestselling books Confessions of a Scary Mommy in 2012 and Motherhood Comes Naturally (and Other Vicious Lies) in 2013. She also appeared on television shows such as Today and Good Morning America, where she spoke about parenting and family life.

    Smokler publicly shared her brain cancer diagnosis in May 2024. She said the illness had changed her outlook on life and encouraged her to focus on spending meaningful time with her children.

    She is survived by her three children, Lily, Ben, and Evan. Many parents and readers continue to remember her for her honesty, humor, and lasting impact on parenting conversations.
