A record 281,223 fans attended World Cup matches on Tuesday, setting the highest single-day attendance in the tournament’s history, said world football authority FIFA.

According to FIFA, total attendance has now broken the previous record of 277,070 spectators, which was set on June 28, 1994, when four matches were also played.

The organization explained that this new record was achieved across four group-stage matches: France vs Senegal, Iraq vs Norway, Argentina vs Algeria, and Austria vs Jordan.

FIFA said that after the first six days of the tournament, total attendance had reached almost 1.31 million people, with each match attracting an average of nearly 65,500 fans.

It added that the tournament is likely to exceed the all-time World Cup total attendance record of 3.5 million, which was set during the 1994 World Cup in the United States, by the end of this year’s group stage.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino posted on social media, saying that 281,223 fans attended World Cup matches in one day, making it the highest attendance day in World Cup history.

He said June 16, 2026, will be remembered in World Cup history and thanked fans for the atmosphere, colors, and emotions they brought to the tournament. He also said this World Cup is the most inclusive so far and shows how much people love football and how it unites the world.

FIFA added that ticket demand is still very high and encouraged fans to check its ticketing website for availability.

It also said that the money earned from the tournament will be used to support the development of men’s, women’s, and youth football in all 211 member associations.
