KARACHI: A severe heatwave is likely to persist across most districts of Sindh until May 31, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Thursday.

According to the Met Office, moderate to severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue in several parts of the province over the next few days.

Temperatures in cities including Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu and Nawabshah may rise between 47°C and 50°C, while Moenjo Daro, Shikarpur, Jacobabad and Khairpur are also expected to experience temperatures 4°C to 6°C above normal.

In Karachi, hot and humid weather is likely to persist, with intermittent strong winds expected throughout the day.

The Met Office said temperatures in the city may remain around 37°C today and tomorrow, rising to 38°C on Saturday, with southwesterly sea breezes continuing.

In southern districts including Tharparkar, Badin, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Jamshoro, temperatures are expected to range between 44°C and 47°C.

Authorities have been advised to remain alert and take precautionary measures to avoid any untoward incidents during the heatwave period.

Earlier, The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert warning of a strengthening heatwave expected to persist until May 26.

According to the advisory, most parts of the country will experience a sharp rise in temperatures, while some northern regions may also receive rainfall accompanied by potentially hazardous weather conditions.

The forecast indicates that areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are likely to receive rain within the next 12 to 24 hours. Light to moderate showers are also expected in the Potohar region, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, and Jhelum.
