US President Donald Trump said he has been briefed on a proposed framework for an agreement with Iran but is still awaiting the final wording of the plan. He warned that military options remain on the table if Tehran fails to comply or escalates tensions.
Speaking before departing for Miami from West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said he had been informed about the “concept” of a deal although no formal draft had yet been presented to him.
According to a senior Iranian official Tehran has submitted a new proposal previously rejected by the U.S. leadership. The plan reportedly includes reopening shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, lifting U.S. restrictions described by Iran as a blockade and postponing detailed nuclear negotiations to a later stage.
When asked about the possibility of renewed military strikes Trump declined to comment directly stating that such decisions cannot be discussed publicly. However, he added that action could not be ruled out if Iran “misbehaves” or further escalates the situation.
Iranian officials have expressed readiness for diplomacy provided the United States adjusts its current approach. They say the revised proposal is intended to create conditions for progress in stalled talks.
The Iranian framework is also reported to include broader regional and economic demands such as the withdrawal of U.S. forces from nearby areas, easing of sanctions, release of frozen assets, compensation measures, and an end to wider regional conflicts. It also proposes establishing a new monitoring mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait remains a critical global energy route, handling a significant share of international oil and gas shipments. Any disruption in the region continues to influence global energy prices and market stability.
Washington maintains that any agreement must ensure Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons capability. Trump has repeatedly emphasized that preventing nuclear development remains a core U.S. objective, while Iran insists its nuclear programme is strictly peaceful.
Diplomatic engagement is ongoing through indirect channels, but significant differences remain between both sides. While Iran is proposing a phased approach focusing first on maritime de-escalation, the United States has not yet issued a formal response, leaving the outcome uncertain.
