A dramatic security scare disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., after gunshots were reported near the venue, triggering an immediate response that led to the evacuation of President Donald Trump and other senior officials.

The incident occurred at the same hotel where former U.S. President Ronald Reagan was shot more than four decades ago, adding further intensity to the situation.

On Saturday, April 25, as the high-profile event was underway, security agencies responded swiftly to reports of a suspected gunman near the premises. President Trump along with cabinet members, was immediately escorted off the stage by the U.S. Secret Service, while the venue was placed under lockdown as a precaution.

Authorities later confirmed that one suspect had been taken into custody near the screening area of the event. The individual was identified as a 31-year-old man from California, reportedly a graduate of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Initial statements from the White House Correspondents’ Association indicated that no injuries had occurred. However, later reports suggested that a Secret Service officer was struck during the incident with the bullet hitting the officer’s protective gear, preventing serious harm.

Following the incident President Trump shared on social media that the suspect had been apprehended and praised law enforcement and Secret Service personnel for their swift and decisive action.

In a subsequent press briefing, he described the officers involved as “very brave” and credited their quick response with preventing a potentially more serious outcome.

President Trump also revealed that he spoke with the injured Secret Service agent, stating that the officer remained in high spirits and expressed pride in his service.

Reflecting on the situation, President Trump described the incident as a “traumatic experience,” particularly for First Lady Melania Trump, who was present at the event.

Despite the alarming disruption, officials have indicated that the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is expected to be rescheduled and held within the next 30 days.
