Iraq shuts down Basra Oil Terminals; Israel bombs Beirut

Tensions in the Middle East escalated further on Thursday as Iraq suspended operations at its oil ports following deadly attacks on foreign tankers near Basra, while Israel carried out large-scale air strikes on the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

According to Iraqi port security officials, at least one person was killed and 38 others were rescued after two foreign oil tankers carrying Iraqi fuel oil were attacked near Basra port. The vessels reportedly caught fire after being targeted by boats believed to be carrying explosives.

Authorities confirmed that all oil terminal operations in Iraq have been temporarily halted as a precaution, although commercial ports remain open.

The developments come as regional tensions intensify, with Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia reporting that they intercepted several missiles and drones allegedly launched by Iran.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran would consider ending the ongoing conflict if three conditions were met: recognition of Iran’s legitimate rights, payment of war reparations and strong international guarantees to prevent future aggression.

In Washington, US President Donald Trump said the United States would protect oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route. Iran has warned that continued escalation could push global oil prices to as high as $200 per barrel.

At the same time, Iran and Hezbollah launched coordinated attacks on Israel, according to regional reports. The Israeli military responded with heavy strikes on Beirut, targeting what it described as militant infrastructure.

The rapidly evolving situation has raised fears of a wider regional conflict that could disrupt global energy supplies and further destabilise the Middle East.

Officials across the region are continuing to monitor developments as the crisis unfolds.
