LOS ANGELES: Global pop icon Britney Spears has once again found herself embroiled in controversy after being arrested in Ventura County on suspicion of driving under the influence, an incident that has rekindled concerns about the singer’s personal stability.

According to officials from the California Highway Patrol, the 44-year-old star was detained late Wednesday night after officers observed her driving in an erratic and potentially hazardous manner along the 101 Freeway near Westlake Village.

Authorities reported that Spears’ vehicle was allegedly swerving across lanes, braking abruptly, and operating without functioning taillights, prompting officers to conduct a traffic stop at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Following the intervention, the singer reportedly underwent a series of field sobriety assessments before being formally taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Law-enforcement sources further disclosed that an unidentified substance discovered inside her black BMW sedan has been confiscated and submitted for forensic examination as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Shortly after the stop, Spears was transported to a nearby hospital, where blood samples were obtained to ascertain her blood-alcohol concentration.

Records indicate that the singer was booked into Ventura County Main Jail at approximately 3:02 a.m. and subsequently released at around 6:07 a.m. the same morning. Officials noted that the results of the chemical tests remain pending while the investigation continues.

In a statement issued to media outlets, a representative for Spears described the incident as “deeply regrettable and entirely inexcusable,” adding that the artist intends to comply fully with the legal process and take constructive steps moving forward.

Sources close to the Grammy-winning performer indicated that members of her family, including her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, are expected to spend time with her as loved ones deliberate on measures aimed at safeguarding her well-being.

The episode marks Spears’ first arrest since the termination of her highly publicised conservatorship in 2021.

She previously faced minor legal infractions in 2007, including allegations related to a hit-and-run incident and driving without a valid licence.

Spears is scheduled to appear before the Ventura County Superior Court on May 4 as legal proceedings in the case advance.
